Methodology & Ethics

This page outlines the ethical framework and documentation practices guiding this project.

Consent and Participation

All contributors have provided informed consent to have their reflections documented and shared publicly. Participation is entirely voluntary, and contributors retain the right to request edits or removal of their contributions at any time.

Contributors were given a set of open-ended prompts organized into four thematic areas: Diasporic Journey, Language and Literary Memory, Transmission and Family Context, and Reflection. They were encouraged to respond in their own words, at whatever length felt appropriate. The prompts were designed to invite reflection, not to extract information.

No compensation was offered for participation. Contributors participated because they wished to have their experiences documented and made available for educational purposes.

Anonymity and Naming

Contributors have the option to use their full name, initials, or remain fully anonymous. Anonymity is particularly important for participants who may face political or social scrutiny, or who simply prefer privacy.

The project respects each contributor's decision about self-identification. Some choose to be fully named, others use initials, and some remain anonymous. These are individual choices about visibility and safety, not judgments about the validity of their contributions.

Anonymous contributions are presented with the same care and prominence as named contributions. The absence of a name does not diminish the significance of the narrative.

Community Ownership and Non-Extractive Practice

This project is committed to non-extractive documentation practices. Contributors are not research subjects being studied from a distance. They are participants in a collaborative effort to document diasporic memory, and their narratives remain their own.

The project does not claim ownership over the stories shared here. Contributors may use their own narratives however they wish, including sharing them in other contexts or publications.

As the project grows, there is an intention to involve contributors in shaping its direction—deciding what questions to ask, how to frame the work, and how to present it. This is not a top-down documentation effort; it is a collaborative, evolving project.

Editorial Approach

Contributors were invited to respond to a set of written prompts. Some chose to write their responses directly. Others preferred to speak their responses aloud, which were then transcribed.

All responses have been lightly edited for clarity, grammar, and readability, while preserving each contributor's voice and style of expression. No substantive changes were made to the content or meaning of any response.

The editorial goal is transparency and fidelity to the contributor's original intent. Where ambiguities existed, contributors were consulted for clarification.

Data Handling and Privacy

Contact information provided by contributors or prospective participants is used solely for communication about this project. It is not shared with third parties or used for any other purpose.

The project does not collect or store sensitive personal data beyond what contributors have explicitly chosen to share in their narratives.

Contributors may request at any time to have their narrative edited or removed from the project.

Limitations and Scope

This is a small pilot project with a limited number of contributors. It does not claim to represent the full diversity of Kashmiri diasporic experience. The narratives presented here are individual accounts, shaped by specific circumstances, specific choices, and specific perspectives.

The project does not make political claims and does not position itself within any particular ideological framework regarding Kashmir. It simply documents individual experiences of diaspora, memory, and cultural transmission.
